Queensland Heritage Plate: Q20248
Queensland’s heritage plates are part of a long and fascinating history of vehicle registration in Australia. From 1910 to 1937, car registration plates were all-numeric, running from 1 to 274,000, while lorry plates began with the letter “L” followed by up to five numbers. Initially, plates from 1910 to 1924 featured black characters on a white background, with the state abbreviation introduced in 1912. In 1924, this colour scheme was reversed, resulting in white characters on a black background. Rear plates were supplied by the government, while motorists were responsible for requesting and manufacturing their own front plates.
The implementation of license plates in Queensland, beginning in 1910, mirrored the practice in England. Plates were introduced as a means of identifying drivers and holding them accountable for incidents, following a rise in injuries with no formal system of accountability. By 1936, Australian plates began to adopt a uniform size and standard embossing dies, initially applied in New South Wales, the Federal Capital Territory (now ACT), and Victoria, setting the stage for the modern registration system we know today.
Plate Q20248 is a tangible piece of this history, representing both Queensland’s automotive heritage and the early regulatory efforts that shaped vehicle registration in Australia.
