Description:

1964 Yamaha YG1

Here is a genuine piece of early Yamaha history. The 1964 Yamaha YG1 was one of the bikes that built the brand's reputation outside Japan, and this example is about as good as they come, presenting as a very nice older restoration that has been kept in excellent condition since the work was done.

The 80cc single-cylinder two-stroke is all there and correct, including the Autolube automatic oil injection system, which was genuinely innovative technology for a small-capacity bike in 1964. Both side covers carry the original white 'YAMAHA injection system' label, and the transparent sight glass on the oil pump is intact. The engine presents dry and clean with no evidence of leaks or neglect. A new battery has been fitted, and the lights and electrics are reported to be working.

The chrome fuel tank is the star of the show. It is finished in chrome with black painted lower panels and red pinstripe detailing, and the blue Yamaha tuning fork badge sits dead centre on each side. The chrome is bright and well-preserved. The silver-champagne metallic bodywork on the frame and fenders is consistent and glossy throughout. The chrome exhaust header is equally impressive, and the wire-spoke rims carry a good shine with no missing or bent spokes.

The two-tone black and cream seat upholstery looks to have been re-done during the restoration and remains in very good shape. The enclosed chain guard, a signature YG1 feature, is straight and correctly finished. The speedometer reads 11,291 miles and the instrument cluster, made by Nippon Seiki, is presented in clean condition with its Neutral indicator and all markings legible.

VIN Y20-836536 matches the engine number and the frame stamping is consistent. The vendor describes this example as 100% correct, and nothing in the photos contradicts that claim.

This is a bike for the serious Japanese vintage collector who wants an early Yamaha they can be proud of in any company. A standout lot.
