1978 Pontiac Trans Am
This 1978 Pontiac Trans Am is a left-hand-drive example of one of America’s most recognisable muscle cars, finished in Blue and powered by a 6.6-litre V8 with an automatic transmission. Imported to Australia in 2010, it has since undergone significant restorative work carried out by successive owners, documented through an extensive history file. Originally built in June 1978 at GM’s Van Nuys, California plant, the Trans Am was first delivered to Huber Pontiac in Springfield, Illinois before making its way to Australia. It originally left the factory in Platinum Poly with Carmine Red cloth trim and was equipped with a 400ci V8 and four-barrel carburettor.
The exterior has been refinished in metallic blue and retains the hallmark Trans Am styling elements, including the large Firebird decal on the bonnet, shaker scoop with T/A 6.6 lettering, colour-coded bumpers, LED headlights, rear spoiler, and dual polished exhaust tips. The bodywork was taken back to a bare shell for repainting; however, some refinement to panel fitment and alignment would further improve presentation. A crack is noted in the upper passenger-side corner of the windscreen. The car now rides on brand-new 15-inch chrome Cragar wheels with BF Goodrich white-letter tyres.
Inside, the cabin was restored in 2021 and now features black upholstery with silver accents. Both front and rear bucket-style seats have been retrimmed, with lap/sash belts fitted up front. A polished three-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of an aluminium swirl-finish dashboard fascia, complemented by an Intellitronix Firebird digital dash upgrade. Entertainment is handled by a Retrosound unit feeding Alpine 6x9 speakers. The interior also benefits from new carpet, replaced headlining, a refurbished centre console and a neatly trimmed boot area.
Under the bonnet sits a period-correct 400ci (6.6-litre) V8 fitted with a Quadrajet carburettor and shaker assembly. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a three-speed automatic transmission and a factory GM 10-bolt limited-slip differential. Steering components were replaced in 2013, while the exhaust system—including headers and dual chrome splitters—was renewed in 2021. The suspension remains faithful to factory specification, utilising coil springs at the front and leaf springs at the rear, with power-assisted disc brakes up front and drums at the rear.
