1965 Puch Sears Allstate
The 1965 Puch Sears Allstate Sabre is one of those bikes that stops you in your tracks. This is a genuine mid-century Austrian-American rarity, built by Puch in Graz under the Daimler-Steyr umbrella and sold through the Sears catalogue network in the United States. The Sears connection gave everyday Americans access to real European engineering by simply flipping through their mail-order catalogue, and the 'Sabre' variant was the sporty pick of the range. In this red-and-chrome livery it looks absolutely the part, and the gold cursive 'Sabre' script on the chrome tank panel confirms exactly what you're looking at.
What you have here is an exceptionally well-preserved original survivor. The red paintwork is still vibrant and glossy across the tank, frame, and fenders after sixty years. The chrome centre strip on the tank is outstanding, highly reflective with zero visible pitting. The aluminium engine cases carry a natural aged patina but are clean and undamaged. The black vinyl seat is intact, smooth, and crease-free. The wire-spoke wheels are straight with no missing or damaged spokes. This is not a restored bike. It is a bike that has genuinely been cared for.
The odometer shows just over 1,861 miles (noting the listing states 1,186 miles, bidders should verify the reading in person), an extraordinarily low reading for a machine of this age that points to a long life in storage or light display use. The 50cc two-stroke single fires through a simple 3-speed manual gearbox, and with matching engine and frame numbers (both 8406715), the numbers-matching claim stacks up.
One cosmetic note worth knowing: the speedometer lens is crazed and cracked from UV and age, which is common on VDO instruments of this vintage. Replacement lenses are available and it is a minor rectification. Everything else presents beautifully.
This one is for the collector who wants something genuinely different on the shelf or in the showroom. Austro-American catalogue history, extremely low mileage, matching numbers, original unrestored condition. Displayed on a classic chequered showroom floor it looks like it belongs in a museum, and that is exactly where it will end up.
