Condition: Good. Painting appears well-preserved with no visible foxing, tears, or fading. Natural deckled edges of handmade paper are a feature of the medium, not a defect. Frame is in good condition with no visible chips or damage. Minor natural toning to paper margins consistent with age.



Rebati Mandal is a Mithila artist from Kuwa village in Janakpur, Nepal, working within one of South Asia's most celebrated folk painting traditions. Her work was included in the Kathmandu Triennale 2021 and has been exhibited through Indigo Arts in Philadelphia. The Jhijhiya is a traditional dance form of the Mithila region with deep cultural roots, and this work documents that tradition in the characteristic style of the form: bold black outlines, flat vibrant color fills, and dense decorative patterning across every available surface.



The composition depicts four women in traditional dress and jewellery carrying stacked kalash (water pots) on their heads, surrounded by fish motifs representing fertility and good fortune. A lower register shows fish and aquatic life, framed by a blue wave-pattern border. The line quality and color discipline throughout are consistent with a practiced hand..
