THANH CHUONG (b. 1949) The Man, 2004 Lacquer on board (son mai) Signed lower right Dimensions (unframed): 55 x 70 cm Provenance: Private collection, Acacia Ridge QLD. Certificate of Authenticity: Included. Condition: Good. Lacquer surface is intact with the characteristic semi-matte, layered quality of the son mai technique. Minor surface wear and light scuffing are visible in the blue-grey tonal areas of the composition. No major cracking, crazing, or chip losses are apparent. Painted yellow border is well-preserved. Corner edges show minor wear consistent with age and handling. Presented unframed. Thanh Chuong (b. 1949) is among the most widely exhibited contemporary Vietnamese artists, celebrated for his mastery of the traditional son mai lacquer technique and his bold synthesis of Cubist geometric structure with the deep, luminous colour of layered lacquer resin. "The Man" (2004) presents a stylised abstract figure through interlocking planes of crimson, emerald, golden yellow, and steel blue, anchored by confident black linework and a painted yellow perimeter border. The rich, jewel-like surface depth achievable only through the labour-intensive son mai process gives the work a tactile presence that photographs cannot fully convey. Lot includes the unframed lacquer panel and Certificate of Authenticity as described.
