Description

Morgan has been hand-building cars on an ash timber frame at Malvern Link since 1936, and the Plus 4 is the model that made them internationally significant. Produced from 1950 to 1969, the Plus 4 used Triumph running gear, first the TR2 unit and then the TR3's 2.0-litre four, in a body that was already deliberately old-fashioned when it launched. That anachronism became the entire point. These are tactile, mechanical, honest driving machines that put you in contact with the road in a way no modern car can replicate. The 1956 model sits squarely in the TR3-engined period, with the 2.0-litre four producing around 100bhp in a car that weighs barely 850kg. The result is genuinely entertaining.

The photos show this example in exceptional condition, consistent with the indicated 429 miles on the clock. The cream bodywork is presented at concours level, with deep gloss across all panels, straight lines throughout, and chrome work that is highly polished and reflective. The vertical chrome grille, dual round headlights, chrome bumpers front and rear with overriders, side bonnet louvers, and exterior-mounted spare wheel on a chrome luggage rack at the rear all present immaculately. The Morgan and "75 Years of Morgans" commemorative badge on the grille confirms a well-regarded provenance piece. The cream leather interior shows virtually no compression or use wear on the bucket seats, with tight, well-defined piping, a cream gear shift gaiter, and the period-correct large-diameter cream steering wheel all in superb condition. The "CS. ENGLAND" Morgan factory sill plate is visible. Smiths instruments on the black dashboard are intact and original. The engine bay shows the Triumph TR-series four with a chrome valve cover, dual SU carburettors, and a clean chrome air filter assembly, consistent with a low-mileage preserved or sympathetically restored example. The 4-speed floor shifter is in place with a chrome knob bearing the gear pattern. The black soft top is clean and well-fitted with a rear window, and the traditional removable side curtains are in place.

Morgan Plus 4s from this era are seriously collectible and the market reflects it. A comparable 1956 Plus 4 sold on Bring a Trailer in July 2024 for US$28,500 (approximately A$44,000). Broad Arrow Auctions sold a supercharged 1956 Plus 4 for US$50,400 at The Amelia in 2024. UK classic car valuations currently put the Plus 4 of this era at GBP 23,000 (approximately A$45,000). These cars rarely come up for sale in Australia, and an example in this condition with this mileage is exceptional.
