The VL Calais is the flagship of the VL Commodore range, and in turbocharged specification it represents one of the most desirable Australian production cars of the 1980s. The Nissan-sourced RB30ET engine was a revelation when it arrived in 1986, delivering genuine performance with a character that set the VL Turbo apart from anything else on Australian roads. The Calais trim added a premium interior, unique exterior badging, and the iconic striped bootlid applique that still turns heads today. At 109,788 kilometres this is a genuinely low-mileage survivor, and the vendor advises it has been fully restored with a newly trimmed genuine interior and refreshed engine.
The blue metallic exterior presents exceptionally well. Photos show strong, consistent gloss across all panels with no obvious dents or panel damage. The distinctive CALAIS bootlid badge and horizontal striped trim applique are present and intact, both in above-average preserved condition. The factory alloy wheels, with their signature star-cut pattern and Holden centre caps, are correct to specification and show minor kerb marking on one outer lip. The chrome door handles and body side mouldings are bright and intact. The roof rail and C-pillar body seams are clean with rubber trim in good order.
The interior is a standout. The grey quilted cloth upholstery on both front and rear seats presents in excellent condition with no visible wear, fading or sagging, entirely consistent with the low kilometre claim. The VL Calais digital instrument cluster is present, the original dashboard is clean and crack-free, and the grey door trims with their distinctive diagonal chevron pattern are well-preserved front and rear. This is the kind of interior that collectors spend years trying to find. The vendor advises a security system and GPS tracker with remote immobilisation have been fitted.
