1971 Chrysler Valiant VG hardtop coupe, restomod build, 340ci V8, automatic transmission, RWD, 29,323km indicated, 6-seat bench configuration.
Description
The VG Valiant hardtop coupe is one of the more underrated shapes in Australian automotive history. Chrysler Australia built these two-door pillarless coupes from 1969 to 1971, and the clean, wide-stance profile has aged better than most of its contemporaries. The VG generation represented the high point of Chrysler Australia's engineering confidence, and surviving hardtop examples are increasingly sought after, especially in restomod form where the structure and lines are preserved but the mechanicals are brought up to modern standards.
This particular VG presents as a thoroughly executed restomod. The black exterior paint is deep and lustrous across all panels, with excellent gloss and straight panel alignment throughout. The hardtop roofline is clean and uncompromised, and the car sits on modern five-spoke alloy wheels that complement the profile without overpowering it. The stance is lowered from stock, giving the car a purposeful road presence. Under the bonnet sits a 340ci V8 with an open-element air filter, chrome rocker covers, red performance plug leads, and an MSD ignition system. The engine bay is functional rather than show-quality, with some surface grime on the lower firewall, but the mechanical upgrades are clear and competent. Inside, the front bench has been retrimmed in grey quilted vinyl, paired with a modern three-spoke steering wheel, a column-mounted aftermarket tachometer, and an aftermarket head unit. The original VG dash cluster remains in place behind the wheel. The build plate confirms a March 1971 manufacture date, 6-seat capacity, and VIN 8-H-23/1801, consistent with the listing.
VG hardtop coupes in restomod form are attracting strong money on the Australian classic car market, with comparable examples trading between $50,000 - $70,000 depending on build quality and provenance. This car presents well and offers a genuine driving experience without the fragility of a full concours restoration. For buyers wanting a classic Australian coupe that can actually be used and enjoyed, this is a compelling package.
