A technically distinct work in ISHISHI's output, this 2022-dated piece is executed in acrylic or gouache on board rather than the coloured pencil on paper that characterises most of the series. The dark charcoal-grey painted ground allows the architectural and ornamental forms to emerge with a glowing, three-dimensional quality. Staircases, pyramidal structures, baroque scrollwork, spiral ornamental volutes, and mechanical forms interlock in the centre of the composition, and a Mercury or astrological symbol rendered in blue appears in the upper left, adding an esoteric or alchemical dimension to the work. The matte chalky quality of the medium gives the warm beiges, tans, greys, soft blues, and mauves a particularly rich, tactile depth.<br>
