A picturesque and technically accomplished oil painting from circa 1980, this work depicts a rustic stone and timber cottage with a corrugated rust-red tin roof, set beside a still body of water. The reflection of the red roof in the glassy river or pond surface is the compositional centrepiece, framed by slender eucalyptus trees on a small spit of land at the right. Ivy and vegetation climb the cottage walls, and the distant trees in autumnal golden-brown tones recede under a warm peach-pink sky suggesting either dawn or dusk. The technique combines assured impasto work on the building walls and vegetation with smoother, more deliberate horizontal brushwork on the sky and water. Presented in an ornate gilt carved frame with fabric liner.<br>
