Hugh Sawrey was one of Australia's finest painters of the outback pastoral tradition - a man who lived the droving life before he painted it. Born in 1919 in rural Queensland, Sawrey worked as a drover and stockman across the Channel Country before establishing himself as an artist, and that lived experience gave his paintings an authenticity that set him apart. "Fergusons Mob" depicts a classic Queensland cattle muster on the Boulia to Winton stock route - a mob of Hereford-type cattle crossing red arid country in dust and afternoon light, a stockman on a grey horse working the mob with whip raised, another rider visible at left, sparse gums and scrub marking the landscape. The sky carries that characteristic low-horizon Queensland dusk, mauve and blue above the red country. Sawrey's signature loose, gestural brushwork is exactly as found in his documented works. The verso carries the title, the location, and Sawrey's name in the artist's own hand. The previous price notation of $3,400 gives some context on what this work once changed hands for, but Sawrey's market has moved considerably since that time. A genuine Hugh Sawrey original and a standout lot in this auction.<br>
