Broken Hill's most famous son, Hart painted the outback landscape, its characters, and its strange humour with a love that came from living it. He was self-taught, relentlessly prolific, and genuinely beloved by the Australian public in a way that only Pro Hart and a handful of others ever were. "The Creek" captures an Australian bush scene of gnarled eucalyptus trees arching over a reflective creek, their twisted branches reaching into a deep blue-purple sky. Small figures with a horse and cart are visible in the left middle ground, moving through the dappled light of the scrub. The characteristic Pro Hart palette of dark greens, deep browns, and vivid sky blue is present throughout, along with the confident impasto brushwork that defines his bush subjects.
