1986 BMW 535i E28 Sedan - Gold Metallic - 215,064km - 3.5L M30B35 Inline-6, Automatic, Australian Delivered

Flagship E28 535i with documented Australian delivery, M30B35 3.5-litre inline-six starts and runs. A genuine project for the right buyer.

Overview

The E28 535i is the top-specification variant of BMW's second-generation 5 Series, built around the M30B35 3.5-litre naturally aspirated inline six-cylinder, one of the most celebrated BMW engines of any era. In period, the 535i sat at the top of the 5 Series range, offering genuine performance in four-door executive guise. This 1986 example is confirmed as an Australian-delivered car by the ADR compliance plate, stamped July 1986 and listing VIN WBADC220401034466. The M30 engine is present and starts and runs, and the automatic transmission engages. This is a long-term project in need of attention to paint, seals, and minor interior items.

The exterior presents in gold metallic with panels that are straight and well-aligned with no evidence of major accident repair. Horizontal surfaces, specifically the roof and bonnet, show significant clear coat failure and paint oxidation consistent with a vehicle that has spent time outdoors. Chrome bumpers and exterior trim retain their character. The windscreen perimeter seals at the A-pillar junction are significantly deteriorated and will require replacement. The inner front wheel arch liners are degraded, with one showing makeshift tape repairs.

Inside, the cream leather upholstery presents in reasonable condition with wear consistent with the age and kilometres, including some bolster wear on the driver's seat. The original BMW three-spoke sport steering wheel is fitted. A dashboard mat has been fitted over the top of the dashboard, a common solution on E28 examples of this age. An aftermarket Pioneer head unit has been fitted in the centre console, and the original analogue instrument cluster reads 215,064km. The rear leather seats are in comparable condition to the front.

The M30B35 engine bay shows honest age and grime but presents as complete. Australian delivery is confirmed by the ADR compliance plate on the firewall. E28 535i examples in recommissioned condition are selling in the $15,000-$22,000 range; as a project presenting in this state, the price guide of $12,000-$18,000 reflects the investment the right buyer will put in to bring this car to the standard it deserves.
