1997 BMW Z3 E36 Roadster - Black / Sand Beige - 279,922km - 1.9L Four-Cylinder, 5-Speed Manual, Rear-Wheel Drive

1997 BMW Z3 E36 roadster, Schwarz (Black) exterior, Sand Beige leather and trim interior, 1.9-litre M44 four-cylinder engine, five-speed manual transmission, rear-wheel drive, 279,922km, compliance plate date July 1997, single key supplied, service records present from 1997 to 2020.

Description

The BMW Z3 roadster needs no introduction. Launched in 1995 and built in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the Z3 was BMW's first mass-production sports car since the 1950s. The combination of rear-wheel drive, a proper manual gearbox, and the sort of roadster proportions that make people stop and stare gave the Z3 an immediately iconic status. The 1.9-litre four-cylinder models were the entry point to the range, and their 5-speed manuals made the most of the engine's character. The Z3 is now firmly a modern classic, with values holding steady and enthusiasm from the BMW community continuing to grow.

This 1997 example presents as a genuine, unrestored roadster that has been driven and used. The Schwarz exterior holds reasonable gloss on the doors and rear quarters, with the body panels straight and panel gaps even. The bonnet shows significant clear coat failure across a wide area, visible in photos, with the surface taking on an oxidised and chalky appearance. There is active rust present on the driver's door near the window frame, with paint lifting and corrosion visible through the photos. The soft top is the original black canvas roof, present and functional. Wheels are the original BMW Style 35 five-spoke alloys fitted with Goodride Supercat budget tyres. The interior is two-tone: black leather seats with a sand beige dashboard, door cards, and centre console. The wood-trimmed centre console, wooden gear knob, and original BMW radio/cassette head unit give the interior a correct period feel. Seat bolsters show wear consistent with nearly 280,000km. Vendor advises the driver's door window gets stuck and does not fully raise. Service records accompany the car from 1997 through to 2020.

For enthusiasts, the Z3 1.9 manual represents an accessible entry point to rear-wheel-drive open-top motoring with genuine BMW credentials. Comparable Z3 roadsters in better cosmetic condition are asking $9,000-$13,000 on the private market in Australia. This example, presented honestly with its condition documented in full, will find its level with a buyer who values the driving experience and is comfortable attending to the cosmetic and door rust work themselves.
