Overview
The Austin Princess limousine represents the pinnacle of post-war British automotive craftsmanship. Produced by the British Motor Corporation in small numbers from 1957, the Princess was designed to offer chauffeur-driven luxury for dignitaries, government use, and discerning private buyers. Fitted with a long-wheelbase body by the BMC coachworks, the Princess competed directly with Rolls-Royce and Bentley in the formal limousine market, offering a level of engineering sophistication that belied its more modest price compared to its rivals.
This 1959 example is presented in the rare Landaulet body configuration, where the rear passenger compartment is fitted with a folding canvas hood section in addition to the fixed steel front roof. This was the most prestigious variant of the Princess body, used for civic and ceremonial occasions where an open rear passenger section was desired. The chassis plate reads DM4106D1. The paint presents in cream throughout with good gloss across all panels and straight, even panel gaps. The chrome front bumper with overriders, torpedo-style front indicators, twin chrome headlights in surrounds, and the winged Austin mascot on the bonnet all present with age-appropriate patina but remain structurally sound. Original whitewall tyres are fitted. The Landaulet canvas hood section over the rear compartment is in serviceable condition.
The interior is exceptional for a 67-year-old vehicle. The front bench seat, rear bench seat, fold-out occasional seats (jump seats), door cards, headlining, and carpets are all in cream and present in very good condition consistent with the low recorded mileage of 40,453 miles. The burr walnut dashboard fascia with original Smiths instrumentation (speedometer, clock, ammeter, oil pressure) is intact. The gear lever is a floor-mounted manual. Vendor advises original specification maintained throughout. Two keys are included.
