About the Spider 2000
The Fiat 124 Spider is a genuine design classic. Penned by Battista "Pinin" Farina himself and launched in 1966, it remained in production for nearly 20 years, with over 200,000 units built. The final evolution of the model, the fuel-injected 2000 variant produced from 1980 through 1985, is the most accomplished of the range, combining a twin-cam 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection, a slick five-speed gearbox, and all the elegance of the original Pininfarina design. This 1982 example was built at Fiat Auto S.p.A. in October 1981 (confirmed by factory door jamb plate) as a US-specification left-hand drive car for the California market. It carries a California State Certificate of Title and was legally imported to Australia, receiving Victorian VASS modification certification in June 2017. It has been on Australian roads since.
The exterior presents in light blue with a freshly replaced cream soft top fitted in March 2026. The body lines are straight with no evidence of major accident damage, and the bodywork retains much of its original gloss. The light blue paintwork shows the minor crazing around the windscreen surround area that is common and expected on a 44-year-old car, along with the stone chip on the bonnet noted by the vendor. Chrome trim and the original Fiat crosshair alloy wheels are present and correct, fitted with Duration tyres. The soft top bow and hood fabric are both new, giving the car a fresh open-air driving experience.
Inside, the cabin is trimmed throughout in blue vinyl and dark green carpet, creating the distinctly period Italian interior that Spider owners love. The bucket seats are structurally sound and presentable. The original walnut veneer dashboard is in excellent condition, featuring the factory Veglia Borletti instrument cluster with speedometer (in MPH, confirming US spec), temperature gauge, and Bosch electronic tachometer. The distinctive "pininfarina spider 2000" script badge sits proudly on the glovebox fascia. A Ferrero three-spoke sports steering wheel has been fitted in place of the original, wearing the correct Fiat badge in the hub. An aftermarket Dual AM/FM/CD receiver is mounted below the dash. A rear bench seat adds occasional extra passenger capacity. The original California-spec documents are included with the sale.
Mechanically, the 2.0-litre twin-cam fuel-injected engine is in regular running condition, with the engine bay presenting in working order. Vendor advises a new clutch kit and bearings were fitted in June 2026, a new fuel sending unit was replaced in June 2026, and a new radiator core and external thermostat were fitted in July 2026. The five-speed manual gearbox shifts through all ratios. This is a car that has had meaningful investment in its mechanical reliability in the past 12 months. Also included in the sale is a complete set of stainless steel bumpers with fitting adapters, allowing the buyer to choose between the chrome bumper style currently fitted or upgrade to the cleaner stainless steel look.
