Description:

1964 Mercedes-Benz 220S W111 Sedan - Blue - 19,864 Miles - 2.2L Inline Six, Automatic

A genuine low-mileage survivor from Stuttgart's golden era, presented in original blue over red leather.

Overview

The W111 "Fintail" Mercedes-Benz is one of the most recognisable shapes in post-war European motoring. Built from 1959 to 1968, the W111 chassis represented Mercedes at its most confident, combining rigorous engineering with a design that still turns heads six decades later. The 220S variant carries the naturally aspirated 2.2-litre inline six-cylinder with a single carburettor setup and a smooth-shifting automatic transmission. It is the carburettor model in the 220 range, simpler and more accessible than the injected 220SE, and beloved for exactly that reason. The odometer reads 19,864 miles, and with the speedo calibrated in MPH, this appears to be an exceptionally low-use example by any measure.

The exterior presents in a deep, rich blue that holds good gloss across the main panels, with some natural cloudiness visible on the bonnet and roof in direct sunlight that is consistent with the vehicle's age and original lacquer. Panels are straight and well-aligned with no accident damage or obvious filler repairs visible. The chrome front grille, bumpers, and trim show the kind of honest patina you would expect from a 60-year-old car that has not been over-restored. The period Mercedes hood ornament and grille star badge are both intact and presentable. Wheels are original-pattern steel with period Mercedes hub caps, wearing a set of 175R13 Kumho tyres that appear to be a relatively recent fitment.

Inside, the cabin is a time capsule. Red leather bench seats with vertical pleating front and rear are in solid condition, with some natural creasing to the leather consistent with age but no tears or significant damage visible. The dashboard is finished in black with genuine wood veneer inserts carrying the 220S script, and the classic two-spoke white steering wheel with Mercedes centre badge is original. The VDO instrument cluster features the upright binnacle with fuel, temperature, and speedometer dials and the odometer below. The automatic transmission PRND selector is visible on the column. Black carpet covers the floor throughout and is in intact condition. Sill plates are original stainless. At this mileage level, the interior presents very well for its age.

The engine bay houses the M180 inline six-cylinder in naturally aspirated, carburetted form. The bay shows honest age and road grime but no obvious leaks from the top end are visible. The battery has been replaced and is functional. A set of four original-style steel spare wheels and tyres are included in the boot, which is a valuable bonus for any buyer intending to use the car.

Vendor advises the odometer reading is 19,864 miles. W111 220S sedans at this mileage in comparable condition have traded in the $12,000-$18,000 range through specialist sales. The price guide of $8,000 to $12,000 represents genuine entry-level value for a low-mileage example of one of the most charismatic saloons of the 1960s.
