1969 Jaguar 420 Sedan - Navy Blue - 65,355 Miles - 4.2 Litre XK Inline-Six, 4-Speed Manual, NSW Historic Registration
One of the rarest Jaguar saloons of the 1960s, the 420 sat above the S-Type and just below the Mark X in the range, and this navy blue example is a driving, usable classic with the engaging 4-speed manual box most enthusiasts prefer.
About This Car
The Jaguar 420 occupied a brief but important moment in Jaguar's history. Launched in 1966 and out of production by 1968 (with this car being a 1969-registered late example), it bridged the gap between the ageing S-Type and the all-new XJ6, using the same 4.2-litre twin-overhead-cam XK inline-six that would power Jaguars for decades to come. With 10,253 examples built over the production run, the 420 is significantly rarer than the XJ6 that replaced it, and values have been rising steadily as collectors recognise its significance.
This example presents in deep navy blue, a colour that suits the 420's clean, understated lines perfectly. The bodywork carries good gloss across all visible panels, with the characteristic four-headlight grille and chrome bumpers looking smart. The Jaguar leaper mascot sits on the bonnet. Inside, the burl walnut dashboard is present and intact with the full Smiths instrument suite (tacho and 140mph speedometer showing 65,355 miles). The car is fitted with an aftermarket Moto-Lita style wood-rim three-spoke steering wheel, adding a sporting flavour to the cabin. The rear bench seat presents well in cream/grey leather with individual headrests and seatbelts. The front seats show age-appropriate wear, with some cracking to the driver's side leather.
The 4.2-litre XK inline-six sits under the long bonnet with polished cam cover. The car was originally fitted with an automatic transmission (build plate confirms Auto Trans No: 26000) but has been converted to a 4-speed manual, with the conversion documented on a Queensland modification plate. Vendor advises the original Borg Warner automatic gearbox is included in the sale, currently stored in the boot. The car is registered on NSW historic logbook plates through the Kar Nutz Car Club, which means use is restricted to authorised club events, maintenance, and associated travel. A buyer will need to be a member of an authorised motoring club to transfer the historic registration. Chassis on build plate: P1F 6924 BW, matching the NSW certificate of approved operations (QCAT41).
