1968 Shelby GT500-KR Mustang Fastback - Acapulco Blue - 84,255 Miles - 428ci Cobra Jet V8, 4-Speed Manual, Detroit Locker Rear - Numbers Matching

1968 Shelby GT500-KR Mustang fastback coupe, Acapulco Blue with white GT500-KR side stripes, 428ci Cobra Jet V8 with Ram Air, 4-speed close-ratio manual, Detroit Locker rear axle, left-hand drive, 2 seats, 84,255 miles.

Description

The 1968 Shelby GT500-KR is one of the rarest and most desirable American muscle cars ever built. KR stood for King of the Road, and Carroll Shelby meant it. Ford introduced the 428 Cobra Jet mid-year in 1968, and Shelby immediately slotted it into the GT500, creating what many consider the definitive Mustang. Only approximately 1,570 fastback GT500-KRs were built before the model year ended in November 1968, making every surviving example significant. This car, finished in Acapulco Blue with white GT500-KR stripes, is a genuine matching-numbers example with the documentation to prove it.

The provenance documentation present in photos is exceptional. The Shelby Automotive Inc. serial number plate reads 8T02R206101-03010, the Ford Special Performance Vehicle dealer tag confirms Body 63B, Color D (Acapulco Blue), Trim 5AA (black houndstooth interior), Date 04F (April 1968), Axle 8D (Detroit Locker), and Trans 5 (4-speed close-ratio). The Carroll Shelby signature is embossed in script on the walnut fascia, the Shelby Automotive Inc. sill plate is present on the door jamb, and the Shelby Automotive Inc. vehicle certification sticker is present on the driver's door pillar. The original Ford antifreeze hang tag and factory maintenance instruction decals are still in the engine bay. A Connecticut registration sticker expired February 2009 remains on the glass, confirming the car's US origins, and Queensland Transport modification plates dated 17 August 2007 confirm it has been in Australia and engineer-assessed since at least that date.

The 428ci Cobra Jet V8 sits in the engine bay in its original configuration with the factory blue-painted block and original Cobra Jet Ram Air air cleaner assembly intact. The original Autolite spark plugs are fitted, and original service tags remain attached. The 4-speed close-ratio gearbox is confirmed by the factory shift pattern on the console and the GT500 shift knob with its blue-striped ball-top. The Detroit Locker rear, one of the most capable differentials available in a 1968 street car, is confirmed by the axle code on the factory plate. The car presents with all four matching original 10-spoke Shelby alloy wheels fitted with BFGoodrich Radial T/A white-letter tyres, and the original Goodyear spare on a matching Shelby alloy is present in the trunk. The Acapulco Blue paint holds strong gloss across all panels with colour consistency expected of a preserved original. The SHELBY boot deck lid lettering, sequential tail lamps, Cobra Jet fuel filler cap badge, and twin exhaust exits are all correct and present. The black ribbed vinyl bucket seats show honest wear consistent with 84,255 miles. The original floor mats carry GT500 branding, and the Shelby armrest console has the embossed Cobra logo. A Philco AM radio is fitted in the dash. The guide of $275,000 to $300,000 reflects where genuine numbers-matching GT500-KR fastbacks with documented provenance are trading internationally, and this example has the paperwork to support it.
