1974 Volkswagen Type 2 Kombi - Sage Green and White - 44,950km - Bespoke EV Conversion by EVClassic

1974 VW Type 2 Kombi, bespoke electric drivetrain conversion by EVClassic, rear-wheel drive, manual gearbox retained, 44,950km, 8 seats, right-hand drive.

Description

The Volkswagen Type 2 bay-window Kombi is one of the most recognisable and culturally loaded vehicles ever made. A late 1974 example in sage green and white, converted to electric drive by Australian specialist EVClassic, sits in a genuinely rare corner of the market. This is not a backyard job. EVClassic (evclassic.com.au), based in Byron Bay, fitted a 28kW German-brand electric motor that mounts directly to the original VW gearbox without an adapter plate, with LiFePO4 battery packs managed by a dedicated Battery Management System located under the middle seat, and regenerative braking. Vendor advises a claimed range of 120km on a full charge, extendable with additional battery capacity. The 3.3kW onboard charger accepts a standard Type 2 Mennekes connection, which is integrated cleanly into the lower rear panel, or can be charged via a 15A household outlet using the included Mode 2 cable (European Schuko end, so an AU outlet adapter is needed).

The exterior is presented at show quality. The sage green lower and white upper two-tone paint is deep and glossy across all panels, with consistent gaps and bright chrome work on the VW nose badge, headlight surrounds, and door handles. The rear panel carries period-correct "ELECTRIC" script badging and an "powered by EVCLASSIC.com.au" decal beneath it, a clean acknowledgement of the conversion rather than a visual intrusion. White steel wheels with chrome VW hub caps ride on 185R14C tyres with good tread remaining. The stance is stock, preserving the iconic silhouette entirely.

Inside, the Kombi runs an eight-seat configuration across three rows. Front seats are trimmed in tan and caramel vinyl and present very well, with matching door cards and headrests. The original bay-window instrument cluster is retained with the period VDO speedometer reading 44,950km. Drivetrain controls are simplified to a DRIVE/REV toggle switch mounted on the lower dash alongside the hazard button. A period Motorpro cassette and AM/FM stereo sits in the original dash position. The middle and rear bench rows are in matching tan vinyl trim with retrofitted seatbelts. The rear cargo area has a deployable rear window and carpet lining. The EV motor bay at the rear houses the motor, inverter, and controller with correctly colour-coded orange high-voltage cabling, alongside a Century Performance auxiliary 12V battery. Appropriate high-voltage danger placards are fitted in the motor bay.
