Description:

1976 Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC - Silver - 153,220km - 4.5L M117 V8, Automatic, RHD

C107 grand tourer, right-hand drive conversion, 56-photo catalogue, spare parts included, Thomastown VIC.

Description

The Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC occupies a unique position in the C107 lineup. Where the R107 roadster got the convertible glamour, the SLC got an extra 360mm of wheelbase, a proper fastback roofline, and genuine four-seat practicality. Powered by the M117 4.5-litre V8, a smooth and long-lived unit shared across the big S-Class sedans of the era, the SLC delivered effortless grand touring performance with a refinement level that put it well ahead of most European rivals. The distinctive louvred rear quarter windows and elongated silhouette give it a presence that still turns heads fifty years on.

This 1976 example is finished in silver with a black leather interior. The Daimler-Benz compliance plate (chassis 107 024 12 008698, type 107) confirms it as a genuine Stuttgart-built car, and the build plate reads paint code 7350 with options including 511, 531, 586, 590, 600, 487, and 460. A Queensland Transport modification plate dated 15 February 1997 documents an owner-performed right-hand drive conversion (modification code L01), making this car fully registered-compatible for the Australian market. The odometer reads 153,220km and the mechanical condition plate (VDO instrument cluster) is consistent with genuine use. The engine bay houses the correct M117 V8 with air conditioning and period accessories intact. Exterior condition reflects its age honestly: the silver paint holds reasonable gloss on the main panels with stone chips on the bonnet leading edge and some paint blistering and rust present at the lower sill sections and door lower edges. Window seals show age-related deterioration at the roof rail junction. Interior black leather is well-used with creasing and wear to the seat bolsters appropriate for a 50-year-old car. Rear seat and door cards are in reasonable shape. The boot contains a box of spare parts, tools, and a scissor jack.

The C107 SLC is increasingly recognised as the more practical and arguably more interesting alternative to the open R107 SL. Global values have climbed steadily since 2018 and quality Australian-delivered examples now command $35,000-$55,000 restored. A genuine driver or project-grade car with rust like this one trades in the $15,000-$22,000 range, making the opening bid an attractive entry point for a collector who knows what they are looking at.
