Description
The Saleen S351 is not a modified Mustang. It is a purpose-built performance car that starts life as a standard Mustang and is transformed at Saleen Performance's facility in Long Beach, California. In 1995, Saleen produced very small numbers of the S351 specification, which combined the 5.8-litre (351 cubic inch) Ford V8 with Saleen's own performance suspension, body kit, Brembo brakes, Saleen branded calipers, and Tremec 5-speed close-ratio manual gearbox into a complete performance package. A convertible S351 was the rarest and most desirable body style in the range.
This example is identified by its Saleen Performance build plate as ID# 950016, manufactured February 1995, making it build number 16 of 1995 Saleen production. One owner has held it from new for over 30 years. The right-hand-drive conversion was professionally completed by Crossover Car Conversions and complied under Low Volume Procedures to the Australian Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989, with approval dating to March 1999, all confirmed by the compliance plate visible in photographs. The Ford factory date plate shows November 1994 manufacture in factory black (paint code UA), confirming the car's documented history is consistent and complete.
The exterior presents well for a 31-year-old convertible. The factory black paint retains good depth and gloss across the main panels, with the Saleen silver body stripes, SALEEN door script, and Saleen front and rear body addenda all intact. The S351 bonnet scoop is functional. A Saleen SALEEN windscreen banner is fitted. The Saleen 5-spoke alloy wheels have been upgraded from the factory 17-inch fitment to 18-inch fronts (Michelin 225/45 ZR18) and 19-inch rears (Michelin 245/45 ZR19), retaining the Saleen branded brake calipers visible through the spokes. The factory grey convertible soft top shows age-appropriate fading and weathering. The front lower air dam shows some cracking consistent with the vehicle's age and use. The Saleen Mustang running horse grille badge shows some chrome wear.
Inside, the red and black Saleen interior is all there. The distinctive two-tone treatment extends through the door cards, dashboard, carpet, console, and rear seat, all in the Saleen specification colour combination. The front Saleen-branded bucket seats show wear to the driver's seat bolster and base consistent with 174,286km of regular use. Steve Saleen's signature appears on the driver's side dashboard, a period Saleen touch unique to this era of the brand. The Saleen-branded leather steering wheel, Tremec short-throw shifter, analogue instrument cluster (calibrated in km/h for the Australian market), Sony head unit, and power windows complete the driving environment. A Cal-Bra protective bonnet bra is included, as are the original 1995 Ford Mustang owner guide and maintenance schedule book. The boot holds a collection of spare parts the vendor has accumulated over the years, including Pedders heavy-duty coil springs, throttle body parts, belts, and hoses.
