Description:

1991 Mercedes-Benz 420SEL W126 - Silver - 303,394km - 4.2L M116 V8, Automatic, RHD, Logbook Present

Long-wheelbase W126 S-Class with the 4.2-litre V8, Australian compliance, and vendor-presented service logbook.

Overview

The W126 S-Class ran from 1979 to 1991 and is widely regarded as one of the finest luxury sedans ever produced. Mercedes built it to last, over-engineered by any measure, and the cars have aged into genuine collector status. The 420SEL is the long-wheelbase 4.2-litre variant, sitting above the 380SE and below the 500SEL in the range. Built November 1989 and Australian-complied in March 1990, this is a genuine right-hand-drive car in the correct specification for Australian roads.

The exterior presents well for a 35-year-old car. Silver metallic paint holds good gloss across all panels with uniform colour. Panel gaps are consistent and the body lines remain straight, with no obvious evidence of accident repair or major panel damage. The chrome grille, hood star, and brightwork are intact. The period-style alloy wheels are fitted all round with tyres in place, presenting neatly with minor wear consistent with age and use. The boot is clean and the boot liner is intact. An emergency warning triangle is present.

Inside, the W126 cabin tells the story of a car that was cared for. Grey leather upholstery covers all seats, with the rear bench looking particularly tidy showing minimal wear and the centre armrest intact. Front seat bolsters show wear consistent with 303,000 kilometres of driver use. The dashboard retains its original padded finish and is free of cracks. Burl walnut trim features across the door cards, centre console, and dashboard inserts. An aftermarket Alpine CD head unit has been fitted in place of the original radio. The automatic gear selector, power window switches, and interior lighting all appear functional in photos. The instrument cluster with its classic analogue gauges reads 303,394km.

The 4.2-litre M116 V8 engine bay presents cleanly. The engine cover and ancillaries are free of obvious leaks or heavy grime, with the distinctive Mercedes round air cleaner clearly visible. The ABS unit is present, confirming the late-production specification. Vendor advises a service logbook is present with maintenance records.

W126 420SEL values have been firm and rising as clean Australian-complied examples become harder to find. Comparable driver-quality 420SEL examples with logbooks have been trading in the $18,000 to $25,000 range through private sales and auction in 2024-2025. This car with its presentation, provenance, and logbook sits comfortably in that bracket.
